Payroll giving

Payroll giving is the most tax-efficient way to donate to charity, allowing you to help people at risk of homelessness every time you’re paid.

For example, a £10 a month donation would only cost you £8. This is because payroll giving donations are deducted before tax, so we receive more money at no extra cost to you.

The process for setting up payroll giving

  1. Set up a payroll gift by filing out a form

  2. We contact your employer and set up your gift

  3. Your donation is deducted from your salary, and the taxman adds at least 25%

  4. We receive vital funds to help us in the fight against homelessness

FAQs

How to set up payroll giving

You can set up your donation in a couple of ways:

What if I change jobs or retire?

As long as your employer is registered with a Payroll Giving Agency (PGA), you can continue to give through your pay even if you change jobs. Alternatively, or if you retire, you can set up a direct debit to replace the gift here.

How your payroll gift will help us

Every 10 minutes in England, another family loses their home. We’re here 365 days a year to help them find them safe, secure places to live. With every payday gift you give, you can help make this vital work possible.

Knowing that we’ll receive a regular gift from you means that we can plan ahead more effectively, to help people struggling with unfit housing and homelessness.

Payroll Giving for employers

Payroll giving is a great way to engage employees and boost your employee benefits package. It's also an excellent addition to your corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme, enabling employees to more easily engage in charity giving.

Payroll giving is easy to set up and run, and there are few costs.

How Payroll Giving works

  • register with a payroll giving agency – they send your employees’ charitable donations to their nominated charities

  • promote your payroll giving scheme to staff by arranging a visit from a Professional Fundraising Organisation (PFO) or by using our online form

  • deduct employees’ donations from their salary using your normal payroll software

  • send the employees’ names and donation amounts to your agency every pay run (normally monthly)

  • Shelter and any other nominated charities receive your employees’ donations from your agency

Match funding

Want to add extra value to your employee benefits package and your CSR programme? Then why not match-fund employee donations?

For a set time to kick-start your scheme or on a permanent basis, you could single-, double- or even triple-match each donation.

Just put a cheque in the post, made payable to ‘Shelter’ and send to:

Shelter Head Office
Payroll Giving at Supporter Income Team
88 Old Street
London EC1V 9HU

Together, you and your employees will be making a real difference to people facing homelessness and unsafe housing.

We’re here for everyone, but only with your help
